The most common signs of a big post-meal glucose swing are an energy crash 90 minutes to two hours after eating, hunger returning sooner than it should, sugar cravings in the late afternoon, brain fog, irritability, and waking in the early hours. These are signs of the fall after the peak, not the peak itself — which is why they show up well after the meal.
One honest caveat before the list. Every symptom below has a dozen other possible causes, several of them more likely than blood sugar. Tiredness after lunch is also caused by lunch being large, by a bad night's sleep, and by the ordinary human circadian dip that happens to everyone in the early afternoon regardless of what they ate. Symptoms are a reason to get tested. They are not a diagnosis, and they are definitely not a reason to buy anything.
1. The 2 p.m. wall
The classic. You eat at midday and by mid-afternoon you're struggling to stay engaged with anything, in a way that feels less like “sleepy” and more like someone unplugged you. The timing is the tell: a reactive dip typically arrives 90 minutes to two hours after the meal, not immediately.
What makes this suspicious rather than just normal post-lunch dip is meal dependence. If a sandwich and a fizzy drink flattens you but an omelette and salad doesn't, that's a pattern pointing at the carbohydrate load, not at the time of day.
2. Hungry again far too soon
You ate a real meal. Ninety minutes later you're genuinely hungry, not bored-hungry. When glucose overshoots downward, your brain reads it as a fuel emergency and issues an instruction to eat — and it does not care that you had a large lunch, because it's responding to a level, not a memory.
3. Specifically wanting sugar, not food
General hunger says “feed me.” A glucose dip tends to say “feed me something fast” — biscuits, chocolate, bread. The specificity is the signal. Craving a fast-acting carbohydrate is a fairly sensible request from a system that has correctly detected a drop and wants it fixed quickly.
This is also the mechanism that makes the cycle self-sustaining: the fast fix produces the next steep rise, which produces the next dip, which produces the next craving. Breaking the loop at any point tends to settle the whole day.
4. Brain fog and irritability
Your brain is roughly two per cent of your body weight and consumes a wildly disproportionate share of your glucose. It has almost no storage. When supply dips, higher-order functions — concentration, word-finding, patience — degrade before anything else does.
The irritability is the same thing wearing a different hat. If you are reliably unpleasant at 4 p.m. and reliably fine after a snack, that is worth noticing.
5. Waking between 2 and 4 a.m.
Falling asleep easily and then waking a few hours later, alert and often warm, is a pattern people frequently connect to blood sugar. The proposed mechanism is a nocturnal dip triggering a counter-regulatory hormone response — adrenaline and cortisol released to bring glucose back up, which is not a state compatible with sleeping.
I'll be straight with you: this one has more anecdote behind it than evidence, and there are many other causes of 3 a.m. waking, alcohol being the most common. But it's a common enough report that it belongs on the list.
6. Feeling shaky or sweaty when a meal is late
Trembling, clamminess, a racing heart or sudden anxiety when you've gone longer than usual without eating — and it disappears within minutes of eating. Those are adrenaline symptoms, and adrenaline is one of the hormones your body uses to raise blood glucose when it's falling.
People with steady curves get gradually hungry. Feeling urgent about food suggests the descent is steeper than it should be.
7. Needing to urinate more, and being thirsty
This one is different. The others describe swings. This one describes a level. When blood glucose stays above roughly 180 mg/dL, the kidneys stop reabsorbing all of it and start dumping the excess into urine, dragging water with it. More urine, then dehydration, then thirst.
This is not a “flatten your curve” symptom. This is a classic sign of sustained high blood sugar and a reason to see a doctor promptly.
8. Cuts that heal slowly, or repeated infections
Persistently elevated glucose impairs immune function and small-vessel circulation. Scratches taking weeks, recurrent thrush or urinary tract infections, gums that bleed easily — these are chronic-level signs, not post-meal-swing signs.
9. Blurred vision that comes and goes
High glucose changes the fluid balance in the lens of the eye, altering its shape and therefore your focus. Vision that's fine some days and blurry others, without an obvious eye cause, is another sustained-elevation sign rather than a spike sign.
Four of these are not lifestyle signals. Increased thirst and urination, slow-healing wounds, repeated infections, and fluctuating blurred vision are classic signs of sustained high blood sugar. If you have any of them — especially more than one, or alongside unexplained weight loss or persistent fatigue — book a blood test. Do not spend three months experimenting with breakfast, and do not buy a supplement instead. Early-caught prediabetes and type 2 diabetes respond extremely well to treatment; late-caught does not.
How to actually check, instead of guessing
Symptoms are noisy. Numbers aren't. Three ways to replace guessing with data, in order of cost:
- Ask for a blood test. Fasting glucose and HbA1c. This is the only one that produces a clinically meaningful answer, and it's the one to do first.
- Keep a symptom-and-meal log for two weeks. Free. Write down what you ate and how you felt two hours later. If the crashes cluster around the same kinds of meals, you've found your pattern without spending anything.
- Test with a fingerstick meter before a meal and at 60 and 120 minutes, or wear a continuous monitor for a fortnight. This shows you the shape rather than the average.
